WC 9th March 2020

This week we have been enjoying the story 'Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs'.

We have been using our prediction skills to think about what might happen throughout the story.

We have written letters to Captain Flinn to ask him questions. We wanted to know;

  • Why do you like dinosaurs so much?
  • How did you feel when you saw the pirate crying in the cupboard?
  • Where did you get your pirate clothes from?

We are hoping to receive a reply soon!

Week Commencing 2nd March 2020

On, Monday a pirate came to visit us at school. We had a brilliant day meeting Captain Rocky Cliff, learning all about piracy, playing pirate games, finding pirate treasure and dressing up as pirates!

We have been writing about our experience. We have of course, been aiming high to achieve some beautiful recounts of our day.

Ask us about the interesting pirate facts we have learnt!

In our maths learning we have been thinking about fractions. We have been looking at pictures of shapes and at numbers and exploring the fractions that have been represented.

Week Commencing 24th February 2020

Unfortunately, the terrible Captain Hook has been on the loose. We have been thinking about how he could be found. We decided to make wanted posters to help locate him.

We used our describing skills to describe what he looks like.

We used our predicting skills to predict where he might be hiding.

We have also written about where to return him to and the reward you will receive if you bring him back.

Take a look at some of our posters and watch out- he could be in Manea!

Week Commencing 10th February 2020

This week we have been writing our very own Neverland adventure stories. Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and the rest of the gang have been having some amazing adventures.

We have been using our acting skills to perform our stories to our friends. We have been using this time to think about what the characters might be feeling and what they might say.

We have been using the words that we have been learning from our 'word of the day' book to make our writing exciting and interesting.

Week Commencing 3rd February 2020

This week we discovered a treasure map! We think that it might belong to the one and only Captain Hook! We worked out that it was a map of the United Kingdom. Over the week we used the atlas and the internet to find out the names of the countries, then we saw that there were symbols all over the map, these turned out to be items hidden in the capital cities. We have explored the ships around the islands and have named the seas in which they are sailing.

Some of us even created our very own treasure maps!

Week Commencing 27th January 2020

This week we have been exploring money, we have been looking at how we can build the same amount in more than one way. We have been trying to come up with the most exciting ways of making a given amount.

We have also been making our frozen yoghurt based on our designs. We have used our skills in fruit preparation to create some delicious frozen treats!

Week Commencing 20th January 2020

This week we have been tasting different frozen treats. We have tasted ice cream, frozen yoghurt and sorbet.

We rated the different treats based on their taste, texture, healthiness and how they make us feel.

We decided that the creature that visited our school would enjoy some frozen yoghurt as this covers lots of the food groups that we need to be healthy and would give it energy to continue its journey.

We then explored different ways of preparing fruits to add to yoghurt.

We are excited to start coking next week!

WC 13th January 2020

This week we have been creating descriptions of the characters we think came to school last week.

Some of us have created terrifying creatures and other have created lovely ones!

We have also been learning about different types of charts and have been using this to help us to answer the question which day is the best for our school lunches.

We have also been learning about what animals need to survive and have been observing a snail in four different habitats to see which one it likes the best.

WC 16th December 2019

This week we have been busy creating Christmas crafts. We can't wait to bring home the beautiful decorations, cards and calendars. We have applied our DT learning to our card making and we think anyone who receives one of our cards will be very happy.

We have also been getting festive in our maths learning! We have been wrapping 3D shape presents and using our maths vocabulary to talk about the shapes of and number of faces, the number of vertices and the number of edges.

Merry Christmas all!

WC 9th December 2019

Another exciting week in Beech Class!

We have been learning about Monty the Penguin. We watched a clip of his story and have begun to recreate this by adding different characters.

We were inspired by a selection of wintery animals and have used these to create characters to add to the story. We can't wait ti write our stories next week.

We were even inspired by Monty in our Christmas hat making!

WC 2nd December 2019

This week we have been exploring shapes. We have been learning the mathematical terminology to describe shapes. If you see us around school quiz us- we’re brilliant!

We have been looking for shapes in our environment and have been using our amazing photography skills to take photographs of the shapes we have seen. We have used these photographs to create presentations to give to Year One to help them with their learning about shapes too!

Have a look at some of the pictures we have taken!

Week Commencing 25th November 2019

This week we have been exploring fractions. We started the week off by cutting cakes into a range of different fractions. We decided that we would rather eat ¾ of a cake than ½ as this is more!

We then explored fractions of numbers. We learnt that this is similar to dividing because you have to split a number of objects into groups.

We have been learning about the Suffragettes. We had our very own march in the playground to protest for Votes for Women!

What do we want? Votes for Women! When do we want it? Now!

Week Commencing 18th November 2019

This week we have been writing letters to ask for our own nanny, just like Mary Poppins. We have been thinking about the things that we would like our nanny to do such as; bake with us, be kind, be funny play video games and do our homework! We also thought about the things that our nanny must not do like; leave the door open, be rude or shout.

We have been exploring sawing through our forest school session. We learnt how to use a saw safely and we had a turn cutting a doweling rod.

Week Commencing 11th November 2019

This week we have been working on creating scenes from Mary Poppins to share with others.

We have learnt about slider and levers, we have created different sliders and levers for different purposes.

We then worked as part of a team to design a moving picture. We had to draw out what we wanted to created and add labels to show what each part will be made of and how the sliders and levers are going to work.

We have started to follow our designs to create moving pictures using a range of different materials and techniques. We have had to evaluate some of our work as we have gone along and we have used this to change our designs.

Week Commencing 28th October 2019

This week we came back from assembly to an exciting surprise. As we stepped into the classroom we began to float, then we noticed that the tables were covered in cups and saucers!

We had an amazing tea party on the ceiling which reminded us of Mary Poppins!

We have been writing recounts of this amazing event in our literacy. we are all working really hard on developing our spelling and writing in our very best handwriting!

Week Commencing 14th October 2019

This week we have been exploring nature as art. We used the light board to explore space and layout. We have really enjoyed using these to create art and came up with fantastic, original ideas such as patterns, shapes and pictures.

We have foraged for arrange of natural items and used these to create some amazing prints. These will become part of our whole school art project. We used the hammers to encourage the colours to come through the material. We explored the space available and created a range of different effects.

Week Commencing 7th October 2019

We worked hard to work out how to make smoothies and after creating (and tasting!) our smoothies we have written instructions to tell other people how to make these. We have learnt that these need to be written in order and need to contain imperative verbs to tell you what to do.

We had to use our measuring skills to weigh out and measure the ingredients. We had to work as a team to share out the different jobs. We also had to work carefully to make sure we didn’t spill any!

Week Commencing 30th September 2019

This week we have been learning about setting descriptions.  We have continued working on our fantastic expanded noun phrases and incorporated some of those into writing our setting description of the Evil Pea’s freezer.

In our maths, we have been working on exchanging problems with money.  We have a shop in our class where we can buy food but we need to have the exact money. This means sometimes we need to exchange a 10p coin for ten 1p coins.  We bought a lot of delicious food.

We have also used this food for our Science learning.  We have discussed the Eat Well plate and how to have a balanced diet.  We enjoyed classifying food by putting certain foods into certain sections of the Eat Well plate.  We have also learned why exercise is so important for our bodies.

Week Commencing 23rd September 2019

This week we have been learning about expanded noun phrases. After exploring a range of different items, we tasted some fruits and vegetables. We used adjectives to describe them and then built some amazing expanded noun phrases.

In our forest school session we collected leaves and explore how we could use these to create art. We created beautiful rubbings of the leaves and we have been thinking about other ways in which we could use leaves creatively.

We have also been exploring Superhero music. We loved dancing to the music and talking about how it changed. We then worked as part of a team to create our own music to accompany Supertato!

Week Commencing 16th September 2019

This week we have changed the story of Supertato. We have created new characters and added them to the story. You wouldn’t believe how many different fruits and vegetables can be villains!

We have also been exploring ‘Evil Pea Partitioning’. This is when the Evil Pea partitions the same number in lots of different ways. We have challenged ourselves to beat him and partition numbers in even more ways! Some of us even portioned numbers into three or more parts!

We have also been working on our team work skills. We have been working out how to cross from one side of the supermarket to the other as a team and stepping only on the coins! Although it has been a tricky challenge, with perseverance and team work we have all succeeded.

WC 9th September 2019

This week we have been learning about place value. We have been learning about how numbers are built and what the digits in numbers mean. We have been challenging ourselves to build numbers in a range of different ways.

During Forest School we explored the leaves outside. We looked at the sizes, colours, patterns, shapes and textures. We looked at how the leaves are beginning to change and sorted them between leaves showing signs of summer and leaves showing signs of autumn.

We have also been learning about which parts of the world are the hottest and the coldest. We learnt that counties on or near the equator are hotter and places nearer to the North and South Poles are colder. We talked about where we would most like to live and why. Some of us would like to visit some penguins in the South Pole. Some want to live in the North Pole with Father Christmas and co. Others would like to live near the equator to enjoy the sunshine, eat ice creams, play in swimming pools and live in a house with a balcony!

We have been thinking about teamwork. We are challenging ourselves to work with different friends to normal and to take time to listen and think before speaking when working as a group.

Week Commencing 2nd September 2019

We have had a brilliant week exploring Year 2.

We have been thinking about number bonds to 10 and 20, we used our ‘Magic Number Sentence Creator’ to explore this.

We have been reading Supertato and have been writing statements and questions about the story.

We have also been learning about what an Atlas is for and how to use it.
